Project Summary

An Energetic young family from Nebraska needed a better solution to transport their family around. With 5 kids and 3 of them needing strollers, they ran out of hands to push them all around on outings. MWH Senior Volunteer Ray Riley designed and build a custom stow-able wagon out of furniture grade PVC that was light enough for mom to load in the van but strong enough to carry 3 kids.

“My name is Betty. I received information about you from a physical therapist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. My husband Jason and I live in Hastings, NE with our 5 children. Three of our sons have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). We use a medical stroller for our 6 year old and a double stroller for out 3 year old and 18 month old. The medical stroller works well, but is too big for our youngest son. Double strollers are ideal for the younger two boys but are often too big for doorways and wheels are too small to carry the wait. Also, it is hard to have individual strollers for all 3 because we don’t have enough adults to push each one and I don’t like to depend on my other children to have to help. We make do, don’t get me wrong…but I dream about a double or triple medical chair that fits through door ways and can detach from each other depending on how many of the boys we have with us at one time. When I was telling the physical therapist this she thought you may be able to help. Let me know if you think it’s a possibility.

Client Testimonial

“Ray and Chris,

I hope this finds you well. Betty and I first of all would like to say that it was a pleasure to meet you guys Monday and also to thank you immensely for the wagon that you made for us.

Secondly, we would like to let you know that we used the wagon all week at the hospital and out at the zoo and it really couldn’t have worked any better! The one thing that we weren’t prepared for was the stardom that it brought with it! Everywhere we went and I mean everywhere, people were coming up to us and telling us how much they loved the wagon! Ray, I think if you wanted to come out of retirement, I think you could make a living off of these things! I’m not joking when I say probably 100 different people complimented on it in 2.5 days of use and half of them asked where they could get one!

As for the functionality of the wagon it’s great. We didn’t run into any situations at all with it being too big or long! You hit a grand slam Ray Riley and the Vertin family will be forever indebted to you and the May We Help Organization.

With sincere gratitude thank you all,

Jason and Betty Vertin”
